Breathtaking beauty, diverse flora and fauna and the nation's highest mountains await visitors to this unique part of Australia.  Steeped in heritage, the Snowy Mountains are situated in the south-eastern corner of New South Wales, approximately 150km south of the nations capital, Canberra.  Many bike riders around the world often only get the opportunity of cycling at low altitude or close to sea-level, but the challenge, enjoyment and benefits of bike riding at altitude are now well scientifically documented.  You will enjoy the fabulous sensations of bike riding on tranquil, deserted roads as you wind your way up into the high country of Australia.

You may not often see many of the Australian wildlife, but it may be watching you!

The town of Cooma is known as the capital and gateway to the snowy mountains and is the most genuinely multi-cultural rural town in Australia; familiarity is common amongst the local towns folk.  We have chosen this typical small town as our home for the week, allowing you to relax and enjoy the peace and quite of this unique part of the world.  Cooma is a short one hour drive from Canberra, most of our guests are surprised to discover that Canberra; is the Capital of Australia and not the more renowned city of Sydney.

Cooma was originally settled in 1823 and remained the centre of the Monaro grazing area until the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Authority (now Snowy Hydro) was established in 1949.  Workers from all around the world converged on Cooma and the mountain construction sites to build the project, then the largest civil/electrical engineering project undertaken in Australia.

practice bicycle are offering you an outback cycling experience of a bike tour in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, Australia.  A cycling holiday week that represents the isolation and solitutude that this huge continent of Australian was founded upon, one of our idyllic environments to practice bicycle in Australia.

About the Area

The Snowy Mountains has a rich and fascinating history.  For more than 20,000 years the Snowy Mountains were home to a number of Aboriginal groups with a unique way of life.  The coming of summer each year saw the arrival of large numbers of Aboriginal groups for a time of feasting and ceremonies in the high country.  This coincided with the migration of the Bogong moth from southern Queensland to the region; the moths were collected by the Aborigines, cooked in hot ash and a very nutritious meal eaten.

The high country was first settled in earnest by European stockmen, graziers and landholders in the early 1800s. This endeavour, immortalised in Banjo Paterson's poem 'The Man from Snowy River', created a myth that has become part of Australia's identity.
The unique beauty of the Snowy Mountains of Australia.

In the 1860s thousands of people from across Australia, Europe and Asia flocked to the gold rush town of Kiandra. Miners came in search of wealth and found gold along with a life that could be lived nowhere else in Australia.

Skiing as a sport first appeared in Australia, at the gold rush town of Kiandra in 1861. Originally referred to as 'snow shoeing' and later as 'ski running', skiing also served a vital purpose, allowing Kiandra's residents to maintain contact with the outside world when roads were closed by heavy snows.

Come the mid 1900s, the Snowy Mountains attracted surveyors, hydrographers and engineers who sought a way to harness the power of the high country's great rivers. The Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electricity Scheme was launched in 1949, and today it provides power to three states.  The high country of Australia and the highest point Mt Kosciuszko (2228m)

The Snowy Mountains are in the south east of New South Wales, and are the highest point in Australia's Great Dividing Range. Much of the region is incorporated into Kosciuszko National Park.  At 2,228m, Mount Kosciuszko is the highest peak on the Australian mainland. The flat expanse of the Monaro High Plain to the east of the region is sheep country renowned for the quality of its Merino wool.

The Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme is one of the most complex integrated water and hydro-electric power schemes in the world. The Scheme collects and stores the water that would normally flow east to the coast and diverts it through trans-mountain tunnels and power stations. The water is then released into the Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers for irrigation.

The Scheme took 25 years to build and was completed in 1974. More than 100,000 people from over 30 countries came to work in the mountains to make true a vision of diverting water to farms to feed a growing nation and to build power stations to generate electricity for homes and industries.

Sixteen major dams, seven power stations (two underground), a pumping station, 145kms of inter-connected trans-mountain tunnels and 80kms of aqueducts were constructed. Even before the Scheme was completed, it was named as one of the civil engineering wonders of the modern world.
